Flax Seeds Allergy

Privacy policy

Flax seeds allergy

Flax seeds allergy is not common, but it is possible to be allergic to flax seeds and caution is therefore recommended. If you are allergic to any member of the Linaceae or Linum plant families, the safest choice is to stay clear of flax seed, flax seed meal, flax seed oil and all types of dietary supplements based on flax. When discussing flax seeds and allergy it is important to remember that flax can be found in many products that we normally don’t associate with flax seeds, such as cough remedies and laxatives. Always reed labels carefully if you have a flax seed allergy.

Flax seeds and allergy signs

Allergic reactions to flax seed vary a lot from person to person, and it is also possible for the same individual to suffer from very dissimilar reactions at different times. Described reactions to flax seeds include itching, rashes, swelling, and shortness of breath.

Flax seeds and allergy to nuts, peanuts and soy beans

Even though flax seeds can have a nutty taste, the flax seed plant is not closely related to peanuts, hazelnuts, almonds or any other nuts or beans. Flaxseed contains at least five peptides that can cause allergic reactions and there cross-reactivity is not yet known. Cross-reactivity for peanut or soy beans has however never been described. Even individuals with serious peanut allergies can normally eat flax seeds without experiencing any allergic reactions. This does not mean that it is impossible for a person to suffer from both peanut, nut, and soybean allergies and flax seed allergy simultaneously
