Flax Seeds and Cancer
Scientific studies indicate that there might be a strong link between flax seeds and cancer prevention, but we still know very little about the exact mechanisms. Numerous studies have indicated that flax seeds and/or flax seed oil may be able to decrease the risk of developing cancer as well as reduce the severity and growth rate of existing tumours. It should however be noted that more research is necessary before anyone can know who flax seeds and cancer are linked to each other. Some studies have for instance indicated that large amounts of flax seed oil might actually increase the risk of developing certain types of cancer.
It is never a good idea to go over board and consume vast amounts of a single thing. Apples contain plenty of beneficial antioxidants, but eating 150 apples a day will most likely produce serious adverse effects. Prunes contain plenty of health promoting fibres, but eating 25 pounds a day will almost certainly render you severe gastro intestinal problems. The same is naturally true for flax seeds and flax seed oil too. Even if there is a link between flax seeds and cancer prevention, it is never a good idea to start stuffing yourself with buckets of flax seeds or drink a bottle of flax seed oil each morning. Try to integrate flax seeds in your diet in a natural way, e.g. by sprinkling them over your breakfast cereals or including a few tablespoons when you make cup cakes.
Results from studies regarding flax seeds and cancer prevention have been very promising, but unfortunately positive research results tend to bring out the worst in certain unscrupulous marketers. It is therefore quite common to stumble over alleged experts who claim that flax seeds or flax seed oil will cure virtually every kind of cancer; regardless of type or how severe the disease is. In most cases they will also try to sell you their specific flax seed brand, claiming that all other producers of flax seed sell inferior products. Cancer patients and their families are therefore advised to use caution when searching for reliable flax seeds and cancer information, online as well as offline.
