Flax Seeds & Fibers
Generally speaking, 100 grams of whole dry flax seeds will contain about 30 grams if dietary fibers. The American Dietetic Association (ADA) recommends a daily fiber intake of 20-35 grams for a healthy adult on a 2000 kcal/day diet. As you can see, a handful of flax seed fiber is enough push you above the lower 20 gram limit on its own. Another great thing bout flax seed is that they contain both soluble and insoluble fibers.
Flax seed fiber and constipation
The high flax seed fiber content is good new for anyone battling constipation, because flax seed fibers can prevent as well as threat constipation in most cases. If you frequently experience constipation you should however see a doctor instead of using flax seed fibers to silence the symptoms, because constipation can be a sign of underlying health problems. In most cases constipation is however not brought on by any serious disease; it is simply a natural reaction to our modern sedentary life style and a diet to low in fibers. Constipation can lead to other and more serious health problems further down the road, such as hemorrhoids, and doing something about it is therefore strongly recommended. Flax seed fiber is a very easy way of including more fibers in your diet, because flax seeds can be easily slipped into your favorite cup cake recipe, sprinkled over your cornflakes or mixed into a shake.
Flax seed fiber and elderly persons
Flax seed fiber is especially beneficial for elderly persons. Elderly persons are often limited to a physically inactive life style that greatly increases the risk of chronic constipation. Teeth problems can make it hard to chew ordinary fiber rich food such as whole grain bread, and there are many types of medications commonly given to elderly persons that will increase the risk of developing constipation dramatically. Grinding flax seed is a great way of adding fiber to the diet of an elderly person and thereby reducing the risk of constipation.
