Is there a link between flax seeds and hair loss? Can flax seeds prevent hair loss or even make your hair grow back? The truth is that no one can answer these questions yet, because more scientific research is needed before we can know anything for sure. Numerous people claim to have benefited from flax seeds and to them the link between flax seeds and hair loss is clear. Those critical of this idea assert that it might just be a case of placebo effect.

The reason why people even started to experiment with flax seeds and hair loss prevention is that fatty acids are necessary for proper cell function and hair grow from hair cells. In the human body, each cell membrane contains a certain amount of essential fatty acids, and without a steady supply of essential fatty acids the cell membranes will not be kept soft and smooth. With malfunctioning cell membranes, the body is not able to properly regulate what goes in and out of the cell. It will for instance become difficult for the cells to stay moist, because a lot of water will escape through malfunctioning cell membranes. It is easy to realize that a hair cell deprived of fatty acids will not do a good job growing hair.

Flax seeds contain plenty of beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids and that is why flax seeds and hair loss prevention might be connected. Omega 3 and Omega 6 are two different types of essential fatty acids, and we need both to stay healthy. Supplying your body with Omega 3 and Omega 6 is however not enough; you must also make sure that you ingest a suitable ratio of them. Unfortunately, our daily diets tend to contain large amounts of Omega 6 and low amounts of Omega 3, which creates an unhealthy ratio. By eating more flax seeds, you can shift the ratio to a more desirable level.
