Flax Seed Meal
Whole flax seeds can be stored for long periods of time without loosing their nutritional value. Unfortunately, this is not true for flax seed oil, ground flax seeds and flax seed meal. The best type of flax seed meal is therefore flax seed meal that you prepare at home from whole flax seeds, or flax seed meal that you purchase from a reputable manufacturer and use up as soon as you have opened the container.
If you want to make your own flax seed meal, you simply buy whole flax seeds, store them in a dry and cool place, and grind them directly prior to use. Some shops sell special flax seed meal grinders, but if you don’t have such a shop in your area a clean coffee grinder will usually do the trick. Ideally avoid using the same coffee grinder to grind coffee, unless you are okay with your flax seed meal having a slight hint of coffee flavor.
Flax seed meal is not only for humans. Many horse and pet owners are giving their animals flax seed meal since it makes the hair coat glossier and gives the animals an overall healthier look. Flax seed that has been cold pressed, not solvent extracted, is the ideal form of flax seed meal for animals. This type of meal typically contains a higher degree of beneficial flax seed oil than solvent extracted flax seed meal.
One of many interesting compounds found in flax seed meal are the lignan. The lignans present in flax seed meal are called secoisolariciresinol diglucosides (SDG) and are one of several hundred known lignans in the world. During the 1970’s, cancer researchers stumbled over something highly interesting when they investigated urinary substances. They noticed how some substances varied with the menstrual cycle in women and, even more interestingly, that these substances were unusually high in vegetarians and unusually low in individuals who had developed breast cancer. Further studies revealed that these substances were the result of plant lignans being digested by intestinal bacteria.
