Types of Flax Seed
The flax plant can be used for a multitude of different purposes, including the production of flax seeds, edible flax seed oil, non-edible flax seed oil (linseed oil), soap, dye, fabric, paper, fishing nets, and medications. Flax has been grown for thousands of years, and two different types of flax seed plants have therefore emerged through selective breeding: long stemmed types of flax seed plants grown for their fibers (to make fabrics, fishing nets, paper etcetera) and short stemmed types of flax seed plants grown for their seeds (to make flax seed meal, flax seed oil etcetera).
Short stemmed types of flax seed
Short stemmed types of flax seed produce much more seeds per plant than long stemmed types of flax seed. Short stemmed flax plants is the primary type of flax seed grown in North America, and a rich assortment of short stemmed types of flax seed have been developed in here, especially in Canada, North Dakota and Minnesota. Culbert, Dufferin, Linton, Neche, Omega, Rahab and Verne are just a few examples of different types of flax seed from that part of the world. All these varieties have brown seeds except for Omega where the seeds are of a golden colour. Omega, Linton and Rahab are especially popular in Missouri since they give very large yields in the Missouri environment. These three types of flax seed actually yields 1200 to 1400 pound per acre on average when grown in Missouri. For farmers growing short stemmed types of flax as animal food or for industrial uses, it does not really matter if the seeds are brown or yellow. For those who grow flax seed for human consumption, it can be possible to negotiate a higher price for golden colored flax seed types because they are favored by many consumers.
Long stemmed types of flax seed
Long stemmed types of flax seed are grown for their fibers and have much lower seed yields than short stemmed types of flax seed. These types of flax seeds are not commonly grown in North America; the main producers are instead found in Europe, especially Eastern Europe and Belgium. Belgium does not produce any larger quantities of flax, but the Belgian flax is famous for being of supreme quality.
Golden types of flax seed vs. brown types of flax seed
As far as science known, there are no major nutritional differences between golden types of flax seed and brown types of flax seed. Golden flax seeds are popular among those who consume whole or grounded flax seeds, since they have an appealing color. You can mix golden flax seeds into a shake without having the shake dotted with small brown spots. Another notable difference is that brown flax seeds can have a more nutty-buttery taste compared to golden flax seeds. Both types of flax seed does however belong to the same species Linum usitatissimum. Wild Linum usitatissimum always have brown seeds; the golden varieties are the result of selective breeding and possibly hybridization. |
